Local Attractions in Laugharne

Before his death in 1953, Dylan Thomas lived in the Boathouse for about four years- arguably his golden period. The world-famous Boathouse, where many of the man's creations were penned, overlooks Laugharne.

The wooden structure is still highly regarded all over the world for its romantic and literary association with Thomas.

There are many fantastic local attractions in the area. Find out more about what to do in Laugharne.

Kidwelly Castle

If you hope to enjoy a truly medieval moment, consider catching a glimpse of Kidwelly Castle in the morning. The castle is well-preserved and a proud match for any castle in Wales.

The earliest castle on the site was of Normal construction, made of timber and earth. The town itself has maintained its ancient taste, having been established in 1115 AD. The castle was, however, rebuilt in stone by the 13th century.

The powerful and compact inner ward was built by the Chaworth family; later on, the Earls, who became the dukes of Lancaster, modified the castle. Kidwelly was thus a beneficiary of the latest ideas in castle design.

The castle was re-made to fit a concentric design with a circuit of defensive walls to ensure that the castle is held even if the outer wall falls.

Dylan Thomas Boathouse

The Boathouse, which served as the poet's former home, is currently a museum dedicated to preserving his life and work.

The terrace around the Boathouse offers pleasing views of the Gower and the Taf estuary. The tearoom in the Boathouse offers a welcome respite for visitors tackling the Wales Coast Path.

Dylan Thomas made the Boathouse iconic. The building is closely associated with him, and the permanency of the structure ensured that he revelled in a creative renaissance.

Dylan worked above the Boathouse in the writing shed, drawing inspiration from the remarkable views of the estuary.

Laugharne Castle

Looking over the Taf estuary, this relic of ancient period demands that you stand and gaze. With such fanastic views, it will take your breath away.

The Brian family, in the 13th century, built this marvellous structure atop another castle. The mansion we see today is a physical manifestation of Sir John Perrot's legacy.

It did not do well during the Civil War: it was partially destroyed immediately it was captured by Parliamentary forces. The outstanding medieval castle later became known as a cure to writer's block; both Richard Hughes and Dylan wrote in the castle's garden.

Llansteffan Castle

This castle overlooks the sand-flats of the river Towy. The strategic significance and natural strength of this locale were initially recognised by Norman invaders who put up an earth and timber structure.

The castle was used to control a river crossing, and it changed ownership a number of times during fighting between the Welsh and the Normans.

Indeed, the Carnville family, who owned the castle from the 12th century to the 14th century, worked hard to transform the earlier earth and timber structure into a masonry castle.
